Building / Vynl

Vynl

Your own private Spotify — built from scratch. Self-hosted music streaming with Beets at the core, AI-powered playlists, karaoke with synced lyrics, and an experimental AI DJ that mixes sets for your party. After years of trying every library system out there, Beets came closest to perfect — so I built everything else around it.

01 / The build

Your music collection, finally streaming.

Self-hosted music streaming for the collection you already own. Docker-based, Sonos-ready, beets-powered, with optional AI discovery.

Bring your Spotify playlists home and stop renting your music.

Why I built it

After years of trying every library system out there, beets came closest to perfect. So I built everything else around it rather than replacing it: streaming, playlists, Sonos, and an AI discovery layer that is optional by design.

02 / Design decisions

The trade-offs are part of the story.

01

beets at the core, not reinvented

beets already solved library management better than I would. Building around it meant inheriting its conventions and its quirks, which is a real constraint, and far cheaper than another half-good tagger.

02

Self-hosted, no account

It runs on your hardware against your files. That rules out the convenience of a cloud service, and it is the entire point: you cannot have your library removed from you.

03

AI discovery is optional

Recommendations are a feature you switch on, not a dependency. The server has to be fully useful with every AI feature disabled.
